Deeper Still

Deeper Still

Jesus spoke an amazing word to a woman once. This woman was just as lost, alone and confused as I was. That is until I, like her had an encounter with the Living God.

“Jesus answered her, “If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him instead, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10 AMP)

If you don’t already know it, read the story. It is a captivating one. Jesus was tired from his day of travel, so he stopped to rest by a well in Samaria. Soon a woman comes to draw water, and it was to her that He says these words. He goes on to promise that those who drink of the water He gives will never be thirsty again, that the living water will bubble up within them for eternal life! The woman’s response was basically, “Living water? What is that and how do I get it?”

Smart girl. Like me, it took her a while to realize that Jesus was speaking of something beyond the natural, beyond her immediate physical needs. He wanted her to lean in closer, to draw deeper from the analogy His words portrayed. I realized that the same call was going forth from the mouth of Christ through the ages to me today. Jesus was extending the same invitation to me. Would I come? Would I choose to drink from His well of Living Water?

My first encounter with Jesus at the well was three years ago, during a weekend mountain retreat in Moravian Falls, NC. After the second night of teaching about redeeming our imaginations to be with Jesus (something I had been doing for years but never heard a teaching on before), the teacher invited us to close our eyes and imagine Jesus in front of us. What would He say? What would we do? What came to my mind right away when I closed my eyes was Jesus at the well. He was there, waiting for me like I was the woman coming to draw water.
As I approached the well, Jesus said to me, “Want to see something cool?”
“Absolutely!” I said back.
He beckoned me closer and motioned for me to look into the well. “Look deeper,” He instructed.

Was there a “deeper” to be seen? Absolutely! The well of Jesus is so deep. It is deeper than we can imagine! (But that’s a good place to start.) That was the first of many encounters with Jesus and me at the well, and I’m sure I have many still to experience. He has loved me there. He has spoken healing to me there. He has taught me about faith, and about worshipping in Spirit and truth there. I never imagined a song would come from those encounters, but He did.

The night of September 16, 2016, I had a dream. In it, I saw a beautiful honey colored wooden boat floating in a blue harbor on a clear sunny day. I knew that the Father had planned a trip for me on that boat and was giving me a tour before we left. He had cleared my schedule and packed my bags for me and was just as excited I was to go on this trip together. I couldn’t wait to see my room! When I woke up, I asked the Lord what the boat represented. I heard what became the first two lines and the melody of Drink From The Well:

Drink from the well of the living God
Drink from the well that never runs dry

I sat up in bed and wrote down the rest of the lyrics that came to me as I sang them. I cried as I read back what I wrote. They were the condition of my soul, tired and weary from the burdens of the world, in need of a drink once again. I knew the dream and the words I had heard, were an invitation to come and drink.

He has a trip planned for all of us, a journey that He is just as excited as we are for us to take. He invites us to look deeper. He draws us with his love to take the journey deeper into His heart. There we can drink deep from His well and find rest for our weary souls.
